Corpus Christi, Texas – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team closed out a three-match road trip on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 6-2. With the win, the Bears secured an perfect 5-0-0 record in Southland Conference road matches on the season.
The Bears (12-3-1, 7-0-1 SLC) got on the board almost immediately, as sophomore
Ashley Smith found fellow sophomore
Camille Bassett on the breakaway. Bassett finished to the lower left side, putting the Bears up 1-0 in the 4
th minute. Bassett would strike again just two minutes later, fielding a pass from junior
Dayna Mounie and chipping it over Islander keeper Jordan Wainwright to make it 2-0 with her 11
th goal of the season.
"Cami's first goal game from us really pressing hard," said UCA head coach Jeremy Bishop. "We forced a turnover in our attacking third, and found a gap pretty quickly. The second one was off of a really good combo that started on a throw in from Shelby to Dayna, who played to Cami on the back side and she made a really nice turn and finish. Both were a product of the players around her moving the ball really well, and her finding the gaps, timing her runs, and finishing."
The Bears would get another goal late in the first half, as junior
Jessica Pantuso fired a free kick from 30 yards out, putting it past Wainwright's outstretched fingers to make it 3-0 in the 41
st minute.
Oh his team's hot start, Bishop said, "We talked about that a lot this weekend, coming out and putting them under pressure and creating scoring chances. We were able to do that, and luckily we were able to find the net. I felt like we took our foot off a bit after the early goals and coasted, which isn't good, but we responded well and played well in the second half."
The Bears again struck quickly in the second half, as freshman
Carlee Spears found Bassett on a breakaway in the 51
st minute. Bassett found the back of the net to push the UCA lead to 4-0 and secure her second hat trick of the season.
Spears got a goal of her own, the first of her career, in the 54
th minute, gathering a pass from senior
Shelby Wilson and lobbing it over the keeper from 25 yards out to make the margin 5-0. Fellow freshman
Jordan Slim capped the Bears' scoring in the 67
th minute, finishing off a combination from Spears and junior
Alex Moore and putting it away on the breakaway for her fourth goal of the year.
Bishop was pleased by the way the Bears' reserves played in the second half, saying, "Over the last three games, we haven't had the opportunity to get everyone playing time, because of the way those games have gone, but we do have depth and when we can get those players on the field, they can definitely make things happen. That's exciting now, and it's also very exciting for our future."
The Islanders (2-13-0, 2-6-0 SLC) got a pair of late goals, to cut the UCA lead to 6-2.
On the day, the Bears took 16 shots, placing 12 of them on goal. Bassett led the way, placing all four of her shots on target while scoring three times, while Spears was on target with both of her attempts as she picked up a goal and a pair of assists. Smith also put a pair of shots on goal, while Slim, Pantuso, senior
Chele Naudin, and freshman
Anslea Haikey each put one attempt on goal. In goal for the Bears, junior
Anna Hughes made one save in the first half, while sophomore
Lauren Mercuri made a pair of saves in the second half.
The Bears wrap up the regular season with a three-match home stand, which begins with a pair of matches at the Bill Stephens Complex this week. Central Arkansas will welcome Southeastern Louisiana for a 7:00 PM match on Friday night, before hosting Nicholls at 1:00 PM on Sunday afternoon.
"We're definitely excited about finishing the season at home," said Bishop. "We view it as a very big accomplishment to go undefeated on the road, but we can't coast just because we're headed home, we have to finish the season. It's going to be great to be home, in front of our fans, but we know that it won't be easy. We'll have to keep playing well, creating chances, and finishing those chances."
