Huntsville, Texas – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team opened Southland Conference play on Friday night, travelling to Huntsville, Texas to battle Sam Houston State. The Bears got on the board first, but ultimately fell in overtime, 2-1.
The squads traded shots throughout the first half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, heading into the break tied at 0-0.
In the 54

Camille Bassett put the Bears (3-6, 0-1 SLC) on the board, collecting a pass from sophomore
Stacia Carroll and scoring on the fast break, beating the SHSU keeper to the left post for her second goal of the season.
"Cammy's goal was a quality finish," said Central Arkansas head coach Jeremy Bishop. "Stacia played her through on a break, and she just one the foot race, taking a couple of touches and burying it near the back post."
Sam Houston State (4-3-1, 1-0 SLC) got the equalizer in the 71
st minute, when Maddy Panozzo's cross found a sliding Allie Johnson, who put the ball away to even the score at 1-1.
Neither side was able to get the game-winner before the end of regulation, sending the match to overtime, where SHSU got the golden goal in the 98
th minute. Ashley Alonzo gathered a pass from Shleby McDaniel and fired it home off the gloves of Central Arkansas keeper
Anna Hughes to give the Bearkats the 2-1 victory.
"We did everything but get the result tonight," said Bishop. "We defended well, they didn't have many scoring chances, and most of their shots were from distance. We created several quality chances, and barely missed on some of them."
The Bears return to action next weekend with a pair of home matches, taking on McNeese State at 7:00 PM on Friday, before facing Lamar at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
