SUGAR BEARS SPLIT ON FIRST DAY OF LMU/LBSU MIZUNO INVITATIONAL

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Central Arkansas volleyball team was back on the road on Friday, heading to Los Angeles, California for a pair of matches in the Loyola Marymount/Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational. The Sugar Bears opened the day with a 3-1 win over Stony Brook, before falling 3-0 to LMU in the night cap.

In the day's first match, the Sugar Bears (2-6) outhit the Seawolves .154 to -.069 in the first set, grabbing a 1-0 lead with a 15-19 set victory. Freshman Savanah Allen hit a perfect 1.000, tallying three kills on three attempts.

Central Arkansas hit a blistering .367 in the second set, taking advantage of five kills from senior Heather Schnars and three from freshman Samantha Anderson to push their lead to 2-0 with a 25-23 victory in the set.

Stony Brook (2-8) cut into the Sugar Bear lead in the third set, taking advantage of Central Arkansas hitting .167 to win the set 26-24. The Sugar Bears got four kills each from Anderson and fellow freshman Kellen Dunn, while Schnars and junior Fulani Petties each chipped in three. Senior Amy South passed out 13 assists in the set.

The Sugar Bears were back to form in the fourth set, wrapping up the match by hitting .294 to take the set 25-23. Dunn added five kills to her total, while Petties, Schnars, and sophomore Megan Nash all had a pair.

For the match, Central Arkansas was led by Schnars and Dunn, who each tallied 12 kills while hitting .346 and .370, respectively. Petties and Anderson each chipped in nine kills. South picked up her third double-double of the season, handing out a match-high 36 assists while leading Central Arkansas with 13 digs, and Schnars added 12 digs of her own for her third double-double. On the defensive side, the Sugar Bears out-blocked the Seawolves 18 to eight, led by Anderson's six and Nash's four.

In the second match of the day, opened the match with an .067 hitting percentage in the first set, falling 25-21. For the set, five different players collected a pair of kills, as South and sophomore Kristine Hjembo combined for eight assists.

The Sugar Bears challenged the Lions (4-3) again in the second set, but found themselves in a 2-0 hole, as LMU took the set 25-20. Petties and Schnars each tallied three kills in the set.

The third set proved to be the most highly-competitive of the match, as neither team was able to gain an advantage. Eventually LMU gained the upper hand, securing the sweep with a 28-26 win. Nash led the Sugar Bears, piling up four kills while hitting .375 in the set, and the Central Arkansas setters dished out 12 assists.

For the match, the Central Arkansas attack was led by Schnars' eight kills, and Petties and Nash each added seven, while South (16) and Hjembo (11) combined for 27 assists. Freshman Amanda Dimon led the UCA defense with 12 digs, while Nash had a match-high five blocks.

The Sugar Bears travel to Long Beach, California for the second day of the Invitational tomorrow. Central Arkansas will play Oakland at 5:00 PM, before wrapping up the weekend with a match against Long Beach State at 10:00 PM.
