HAMMOND, La. _ The first-place Southeastern Louisiana Lions took advantage of two costly errors to down the University of Central Arkansas Bears 6-0 in their Southland Conference series opener at Pat Kenelly Field.
The Lions (37-14, 21-4) scored six runs in the second inning, but only one was earned. UCA starter Connor Gilmore (7-3) allowed just five hits in his fifth complete game of the season. The Lions won their 12th straight SLC game in a rematch of the SLC tournament championship game teams from the past two seasons. UCA won the title in 2013 and SLU won last year.
SLU's Tate Scioneaux (8-2) tossed his second straight shutout, also allowing just five hits.
For the Bears (23-20, 13-12), senior left fielder Wesley Hoover went 2 for 4, while junior second baseman Chris Townsend was also 2 for 4. Hoover and freshman right fielder Ty Tice both had doubles for UCA's only extra-base hits. Gilmore allowed just two extra-base hits, a double to Carson Crites and a triple to Kevin Carr.
Game 2 of the series is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
