Stillwater, Okla. – The Central Arkansas softball team took a break from Southland Conference play on Tuesday afternoon, travelling to Stillwater, Oklahoma to battle the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The Bears were unable to get anything going offensively, losing their nine game winning-streak as they fell 4-0.
Through the first two frames, both teams struggled to put anything together, but in the bottom of the third, the Cowgirls (14-13) finally broke through. Centerfielder Shelby Davis got things going for OSU, singling to leftfield and stealing second base. After Davis moved to third on a bunt single from rightfielder Shianne Hughes, third baseman Tiffany Mikkelson drove her in for the game's first run with a single through the left side of the infield. A failed fielder's choice loaded the bases, and first baseman Danielle Riddle cashed in, doubling to right-centerfield to clear the bags and put OSU up 4-0.
Both teams were quiet again until the top of the sixth, when UCA loaded the bases. Third baseman
Sam Forrest led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch, and moved to second base when right fielder
Briana Whisenhunt picked up a bunt single. Second baseman
Sarah Bigej reached on an error to load the bases, but a foul out and a double play ended the Bears' threat.
Forrest, Whisenhunt, and catcher
Jessie Taylor were the only Bears to record a hit, as Central Arkansas was outhit seven to three on the day.
Kylee Studioso (14-3) recorded her first loss since February 14
th, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk. She struck out four Cowgirls. Brandi Needham (8-4) earned the win for OSU, limiting the Bears to three hits and striking out four in seven innings.
Central Arkansas returns to SLC play this weekend, travelling to Abilene, Texas to battle Abilene Christian. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 PM on Friday, before wrapping up the series with a single game at noon on Saturday.
