MEMPHIS HANDS UCA FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON

CONWAY, Ark. _ A four-run fifth inning carried the Memphis Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears in non-conference action at a cold Bear Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers (2-2) scored four runs off UCA starter Connor Gilmore (1-1) in the decisive inning, who allowed five earned runs overall in 4.1 innings, with 5 strike outs and 5 walks. Memphis used an RBI single by Carter White, a bases-loaded walk to Chris Carrier, a fielder's choice and a double steal by Kane Barrow and Brandon Montgomery to take the lead for good.

The Bears, down 5-1, got one run back in the seventh when junior center fielder Tyler Langley was hit by a pitch, advanced to second when Braxton Phillips was also hit by a pitch and went to third on Wesley Hoover's walk. A failed pickoff attempt by Memphis reliever Connor Alexander that sailed into center field allowed Langley to score and make it 5-2.

The Bears (3-1) got runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not bring them around in their home opener. Logan Preston had an infield single in the eighth, while Phillips doubled and Wesley Hoover had an infield single in the ninth.

UCA took a 1-0 lead in the first when Phillips led off with a walk against Memphis starter Caleb Wallingford, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Nate Ferrell's single to left field. The Tigers tied it in the third, scoring on a safety squeeze bunt by Darrien Tubbs.

Memphis won despite getting just five hits, three by Barrow. UCA was led by Phillips, Hoover and Ferrell with two hits apiece. Wallingford (1-0) got the victory, going five innings and allowing 6 hits and 1 earned run.

UCA faces Ole Miss at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Oxford, Miss.
