JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Central Arkansas once again displayed the suffocating defense it has shown all season, holding Campbell to only eight second-half points as the Sugar Bears rolled to a 57-34 win at the Hampton Inn Oceanfront Holiday Classic at the University of North Florida on Saturday.
The Sugar Bears (8-1), who came into the game ranked 8th nationally in scoring defense at 50 points per game, held the Lady Camels (5-4) to just 4-of-24 shooting (16.7 percent) in the second half en route to the lowest total allowed this season by the Sugar Bears and equaling the lowest total scored by the Lady Camels, who also lost 57-34 to VCU earlier in the season.
After holding a five-point lead after a half in which the Lady Camels shot 54.5 percent, the Sugar Bears put the clamps on Campbell – giving up just four points in each of the last two quarters. Campbell got two baskets in the first 4:08 of the half, but then went scoreless over the next 9:54 and didn't got just two scores in the final 15:52.
It was the fifth time in six games the Sugar Bears have allowed 40 or fewer points, and the fourth-lowest total (second lowest against Division I competition) in the program's four seasons under head coach Sandra Rushing.
The Sugar Bears out rebounded the Lady Camels 36-29 – their 8th time in nine games to win the rebounding battle – and committed just 11 turnovers (seven below their season average) while forcing the Lady Camels into 19. Campbell not only struggled from the field – also shooting just 11.1 percent from 3-point range – but had a rough day at the free throw line, finishing just 1 of 7 (14.3 percent). The Sugar Bears, meanwhile, were 11 of 14 (78.6 percent) at the line.
Maggie Proffitt had 11 points for the Sugar Bears, all in the first half, knocking down three 3-pointers to raise her career total to 145.
Brianna Mullins had 8 points, 5 rebounds 3 assists and 2 steals while
Kendara Watts added 8 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists and
Sandy Jackson also added 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
Raquel Logan added 7 points and a team-high 9 rebounds, also blocking a shot and getting a steal in 28 minutes.
RaeChaun Edwards, Campbell's leading scorer for the season at 14.5 points per game, was held to 2 points on 1-of-4 shooting.
The Sugar Bears will face South Carolina State at noon on Sunday in the last day of the Holiday Classic, then resume action Dec. 29 in the Farris Center in the non-conference finale before beginning Southland Conference play on Jan. 2 against Abilene Christian.
