Corpus Christi, Texas – The Central Arkansas volleyball team took to the court on Saturday afternoon looking to hand the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders their first loss in Southland Conference play on Saturday. The Islanders proved to be too much for the Sugar Bears on the day though, as Central Arkansas fell 3-0.
The first set was a highly-competitive one, as neither side was able to take a lead of more than two points until the Islanders (26-4, 14-0 SLC) got a four-point rally to take a 15-12 lead and force a Central Arkansas (15-11, 11-3 SLC) timeout. The Sugar Bears came out of the break with a three-point run to even the set, but AMCC got a 3-0 run of its own before the teams again traded points. After a UCA timeout, the Islanders closed out the set on a 4-1 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 win in the set. Central Arkansas was led by five kills from senior
Heather Schnars and 13 assists from fellow senior
Amy South.
In the second set, the teams started off trading points again, until the Sugar Bears were forced to call a timeout trailing 9-4 following a 4-0 AMCC run. From that point on, the set would prove to be all Islanders, as the Sugar Bears found themselves in a 2-0 hole thanks to a 25-11 loss. Schnars added four kills to her tally, as the Sugar Bears hit just .053 in the set.
Central Arkansas appeared ready to challenge in the third set, keeping the set close early, but a 10-2 run from the Islanders put AMCC up 16-9 and forced a UCA timeout. AMCC exploded with a 8-1 run out of the timeout and quelled a small Central Arkansas rally to take the set 25-14 and complete the sweep.
On the day, Central Arkansas was led by Schnars' 11 kills and South's 24 assists, while on the defensive front, the Sugar Bears got 12 digs from freshman
Allie Kemp and 10 from senior
Corri Hunt. At the net, Central Arkansas got three blocks from both sophomore
Megan Nash and freshman
Samantha Anderson.
Central Arkansas closes out the regular season with a pair of matches on the road next week. On Thursday, the Sugar Bears will travel to Hammond, Louisiana for a 7:00 PM match against Southeastern Louisiana, before wrapping up the regular season against the New Orleans Privateers at noon on Saturday.
