MURRAY, Ky. — Central Arkansas got double-doubles from both
Taylor Baudoin and
Raquel Logan, and four players scored in double figures as the Sugar Bears scored their first road win of the season on Saturday with a 61-51 victory at Murray State.
The Sugar Bears (2-1) led for nearly 38 minutes, outscoring the Racers (2-2) 36-22 over the 2nd and 3rd quarters to build a 14-point lead entering the final quarter. After the Racers had whittled the Sugar Bear lead to four with just under a minute to play,
Brianna Mullins closed it out by going 6-for-6 at the free throw line, preserving the victory in the first meeting between the programs.
"Always happy to get a road win," said Central Arkansas head coach Sandra Rushing. "I'm proud of the win, and how we fought. It could have gone the other direction – we made some silly decisions down the stretch. We're out of shape mentally. We've got to get mentally tougher. This team has an unbelievable amount of potential, we've just got to get it together."
The Sugar Bears held the Racers to 30 points below their season average, holding them to their lowest point total since getting just 44 against Illinois on Dec. 22 of last year. The Racers shot just 29.6 percent in the first half, finishing the game at 34 percent. The Sugar Bears did not fare much better from the field, shooting just 36.8 percent, but were able to distance themselves by outscoring the Racers 14-9 at the free throw line and by owning a 17-4 advantage in second-chance points, getting 17 offensive rebounds in the game.
In all, the Sugar Bears outrebounded the Racers 48-27, holding Murray 21 below its season average.
"I thought we did a great job, especially in the first half," Rushing said. "Having that much of a rebounding advantage I thought was huge. Raquel did an outstanding job, and played her role well. Taylor B did well, and
Sandy Jackson did a good job for us and played her role."
Baudoin, the sophomore transfer from Jones County Junior College, recorded her second straight double-double, following up her 13-point, 10-rebound effort at Tennessee with 11 points and 12 rebounds against the Racers on Saturday. Logan had career highs with both 10 points and 14 rebounds for her first double-double as a Sugar Bear.
Mullins had a game-high 16 points, going 4-for-12 from the field in addition to her 6-for-6 effort at the line. She also added five rebounds and two assists.
Maggie Proffitt added 15 points, with she and Mullins each going 2-of-5 from 3-point range.
The Sugar Bears will host Alcorn State next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. to begin a three-game homestand, which will continue next Saturday with a rematch against the Racers, who will be making their first trip to Conway.
