Edwardsville, Ill. – The Central Arkansas men's soccer team opened their Missouri Valley Conference slate on the road on Saturday, travelling to Edwardsville, Illinois to take on defending MVC Tournament Champion SIUE. The Bears were unable to find the net on the night, falling to the Cougars 4-0.
SIUE (5-3-1, 1-1 MVC) opened the scoring in the seventh minute, when Raul Gutierrez connected on a penalty kick following a Central Arkansas (1-9, 0-1 MVC) foul inside the box.
That score would hold until the 47
th minute, when Gutierrez found Mohammed Awad, who converted from five yards out to push the Cougar lead to 2-0.
SIUE would add another goal five minutes later, when Brett Lane found Paul Scheipeter, who hammered it home from 10 yards out.
Gutierez would strike again in the 70
th minute, working his way into the box and firing from 10 yards out to put SIUE up 4-0.
Central Arkansas took nine shots on the night, placing six on goal. Junior
Wes Carson was on target with both of his shots, as was freshman
Daltyn Knutson. Freshmen
Joey Kampmannn and
Chris Holmes each added a shot on goal. In net for the Bears, sophomore
Harrison Veith made a pair of saves.
"Our guys have been giving everything all year long, every game has been an opportunity to learn and improve," said Central Arkansas head coach Ross Duncan. "Tonight was no different. The work rate was there, the commitment was there, but mistakes made the difference. We learn from those, we improve, and we prepare for the next one."
Central Arkansas returns home for a pair of matches this week. The Bears will step out of MVC play on Tuesday night, hosting Oral Roberts at 7:00 pm, before taking on MVC foe Drake at 7:00 PM on Saturday.
