Thibodaux, La. – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team took to the pitch on Sunday morning earlier than expected, as their match against the Nicholls Colonels was pushed from 1:00 PM to 10:00 AM in an effort to avoid expected inclement weather. The Bears got a brace from freshman
Camille Bassett, but still fell on the day, 4-2.
Nicholls (6-9-1, 4-6-0 SLC) got on the board in the fourth minute, as Hannah Savoie found Haylee Atwell, who made a Central Arkansas defender miss and beat UCA keeper
Lauren Mercuri for her first goal of the season.
Atwell found the net again in the 13
th minute, collecting a deflection by Mercuri and putting it away to push the Colonel lead to 2-0.
Central Arkansas (6-11-1, 3-6-1 SLC) found an answer in the 39
th minute.
Kelsey Johnson launched a corner kick into the box, where it found
Kelly McLaughlin at the edge of the box. McLaughlin slipped the ball through the Nicholls defense, finding Bassett, who slid the ball under Colonel net-minder Amanda Boylson to cut the Nicholls lead to 2-1 with her eighth goal of the season.
In the 75
th minute, Spencer Valdespino extended the Nicholls lead to 3-1, collecting a pass from Francesca Curteis and firing it into the top-left corner from 25 yards out.
The Bears answered just a minute and a half later though, as
Ashley Smith found Bassett, who fired a shot off of Boylson and in, cutting the Nicholls lead back to one with her second goal of the day.
That would be as close as Central Arkansas would get though, as Valdespino struck again in the 88
th minute, fielding a deflected corner from Ainsley Pratt and ricocheting the ball off of the crossbar to put the Colonels up 4-2.
On the day, the Bears put eight shots on goal, led by Bassett, who was on target with six of her seven attempts. Smith and
Kate Koch each had one shot on goal. Mercuri made four saves in goal for Central Arkansas.
"It was the same story as our last several matches," said Central Arkansas head coach Jeremy Bishop. We keep giving ourselves more quality scoring chances than our opponents, and have more of the ball, but we've been unable to make it all count. All we can do is keep fighting and stay positive."
Central Arkansas takes the field for their final regular season match next Friday, travelling to Natchtoches, Louisiana to take on the Northwestern State Lady Demons. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
