SUGAR BEARS TAKE DOWN BEARKATS IN STRAIGHT SETS

Huntsville, Texas – The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears closed out a four-match road trip at Sam Houston State on Saturday afternoon. The Sugar Bears continued to roll, taking down the Bearkats in straight sets, 25-20, 25-12, 25-21.

In the first set, neither side was able to gain an advantage until late, when Central Arkansas (12-10, 8-2 SLC) got a three-point rally to even the match at 20-20 and force a timeout from Sam Houston State (10-12, 4-4 SLC). The break did nothing to slow down UCA, as the Sugar Bears finished the set on an 8-0 run. The Sugar Bears got nine kills from senior Heather Schnars, who hit .412 in the set and added seven digs.

Central Arkansas cruised in the second set, opening on a 5-0 run, and pushing their lead to 12-3 with a six-point rally. The Sugar Bears closed out the set with a 7-2 run. Central Arkansas combined for 15 blocks and six digs in the set, limiting the Bearkats to a -.268 hitting percentage. Senior Amy South picked up five digs in the set, while sophomore Megan Nash blocked four Sam Houston attacks.

After trading points early in the third set, UCA got a 7-2 lead to take a 9-5 lead and force Sam Houston to take a timeout. From that point on, the teams played a relatively even set, with the Sugar Bears eventually winning the set by four points to earn their third straight sweep.

On the day, Central Arkansas hit .256, but limited the Bearkats to an attack percentage of just -.060 thanks to 47 digs and 14 blocks. Schnars led the defensive effort with a match-high 15 digs, while freshman Allie Kemp tallied 11, and South chipped in nine. At the net, Nash picked up a match-high seven blocks, followed closely by freshmen Nicole Peters and Samantha Anderson, who blocked six and five Sam Houston attacks, respectively. On the offensive front, South keyed the attack with a match-high 17 assists, while Schnars collected a match-high 14 kills behind a .344 hitting percentage. Nash and Anderson each added eight kills.

The Sugar Bears are off next weekend, before playing their final homestand of the season during the weekend of Halloween. On Thursday, October 29th, Central Arkansas will welcome Northwestern State to the Prince Center for a 7:00 PM match, before celebrating Senior Day at noon on Saturday, October 31st against Stephen F. Austin.
