Eugene, Ore. – The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears played a pair of matches at the Oregon Invitational on Saturday. In the morning, Central Arkansas fell in straight sets to host Oregon, before dropping its second match of the day 3-1 to Ohio State.
Against Oregon, the Sugar Bears (0-3) hit .134 while the Ducks (2-0) hit .365. Heather Schnars, who hit .269 in the match, led UCA with 10 kills while adding three digs and a block, and Amy South turned in a match-high 28 assists. Defensively, Shelbee Berringer had a team-high eight digs.
In the day's second match, the Sugar Bears dropped the first two sets by scores of 25-20, before battling back to take the third 26-24. The Buckeyes (1-2) took the final set 25-19 to earn the win. Evie Grace Singleton led the Central Arkansas offense, collecting 12 kills, while Fulani Petties chipped in 10 and Megan Nash added nine. South picked up a double-double, dishing out a match-high 37 and digging 11 balls, while Berringer had a match-high 22 digs.
Following the tournament, Singleton was named to the Oregon Invitational All-Tournament team. Over Central Arkansas' three matches, the sophomore from Little Rock, Arkansas led the team with 33 kills, averaging 3.00 kills per set while adding 13 digs and two service aces.
Central Arkansas returns to the court next weekend, hosting the 2014 UCA/Sears Sugar Bear Classic. On Friday, the Sugar Bears will take the court to face the University of Louisiana at Monroe at noon, before closing out the day against Boise State at 7:00 PM. UCA will close out the tournament on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM with a match against Tulsa.
