HAMMOND, La. — Central Arkansas saw its season come to a close on Saturday in the Southland Conference Tournament as the Bears fell 5-0 to Stephen F. Austin for their second loss in the double-elimination tournament.
The Bears (25-34) were held to just two hits – one apiece from Amy Gunnells and Ashley Boswell – as they lost to SFA (25-26) for the first time since April 30, 2011, snapping a 9-game winning streak against the Ladyjacks.
SFA got a pair of runs in the 3rd inning to take the lead, scoring on a throwing error and a triple. The 'Jacks tacked on another in the 4th, and then added two more in the 7th, pounding out 10 hits in all and taking advantage of three UCA errors.
The Bears had their best opportunity when Gunnells led off the 3rd inning with a double, but Hannah Stirton and Sam Forrest were called out on strikes, and Sarah Bigej popped up to third base to end the inning.
In taking the loss, Kylee Studioso (17-13) walked none and struck out two to finish the season with 219, fourth most in program history.
The Bears ended their season in the Southland tournament for the third consecutive season, and reached the 25-win mark for the fifth straight year – a total reached only three times previously in program history. As the No. 6 seed, they knocked off 3rd-seeded Sam Houston State in the opener before taking a 5-3 loss to Northwestern State on Thursday, giving them three tournament wins in the past two seasons.
