NATCHITOCHES, La. _ The Northwestern State Demons scored 72 points in the second half Thursday night to overtake the University of Central Arkansas Bears and grab a 119-102 victory in Southland Conference action at Prather Coliseum.
The Bears (8-20, 5-12) held a 52-47 halftime lead but could not slow down the Demons (15-13, 11-6) in the second half. Northwestern State shot 66.7 percent from the field and made 14 of 17 at the free-throw line after halftime. For the game, the Demons made 29 of 40 free throws, compared to 10 of 21 for the Bears.
UCA senior guard LaQuentin Miles, the reigning SLC Player of the Week, had his second straight career-high, scoring 34 points and pulling down 12 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double. Freshman center Ethan Lee had a career-high 16 points, while freshman Jalen Jackson added 14 and junior Aubrey Ball 10.
The Bears shot 58.8 percent from the field in the second half and were still outscored 72-50 by the red-hot Demons. UCA was 8 of 19 from three-point range, with Miles going 4 for 5. But the Demons were even better, hitting 10 of 16 (62.5 percent), with Jalan West 6 of 6 for his team-high 26 points. Zeke Woodley added 24 points as he and West combined to make 19 of 22 shots from the field.
UCA, which entered the game on a two-game winning streak, led by as much as 10 points as Miles tossed in 18 of his points and was 3 of 3 from beyond the arc. The fouls began to mount for UCA, however, as they had six players with at least two fouls by halftime. They finished with 28 total fouls, with three players with four and three more with three.
Lee, a 6-foot-7 freshman from Camden, turned in his best offensive game, hitting 7 of 8 from the field and grabbing 6 rebounds. Jackson was 6 of 9 from the field, making 2 of 3 from three-point range.
UCA finishes the regular season in Nacogdoches, Texas, on Saturday, facing league-leader Stephen F. Austin. Game time is 6:30 p.m.on ESPN3.
