MILES CARRIES BEARS TO SECOND STRAIGHT VICTORY

LaQuentin Miles scored a career-high 30 points in a 76-69 win on Senior Day

CONWAY, Ark. _ Senior guard LaQuentin Miles made the most of the final home game of his career Saturday, scoring a career-high 30 points and pulling down 14 rebounds to carry the University of Central Arkansas Bears to a 76-69 victory over the Lamar Cardinals.

Miles was 10 of 14 from the field and topped his previous career best of 29 points on "Senior Day." Fellow Jacksonville High School senior DeShone McClure scored the final five points of the game for the Bears (8-19, 5-11) as they pulled away in the final 30 seconds to win consecutive games for the first time this season.

McClure finished with 11 points and 4 assists, while freshman Jalen Jackson added 12 points, hitting 4 of 6 from three-point range.

"They threw everything but the kitchen sink at us,' said UCA Coach Clarence Finley. "They played every kind of defense. They even ended in a box-and-one. Coach (Tic) Price is a good coach and he does a good job. Just two veteran coaches going head to head, trying everything. He gave us everything he had to give us and we definitely had to work for that victory.'

UCA shot a blistering 55.6 percent from the field in the first half and led 40-36 at halftime. Miles had 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

The Bears led for most of the first half but the Cardinals (3-25, 2-14) grabbed a 58-57 lead on Donovan Ross' dunk with 6:00 remaining. UCA got a pair of free throws from Miles at the 5:03 mark and never trailed again. A free throw by Nimrod Hilliard got Lamar within three points with 2:43 left but Miles made just enough free throws to keep the lead at at least four points until McClure could do the honors down the stretch.

Miles now has 1,237 career points with two games remaining. UCA was 6 of 15 from three-point range (40 percent) and forced 19 turnovers. Hilliard led the Cardinals with 19 points, while Amos Wilson added 16 and Donavan Ross 11.

"Q (Miles) was able to get to the basket and get to the line and that's how he ended up with 30 points,' said Finley. "It was nice to get two in a row here at home. Now we want to go on the road and get two more to end it right for these seniors.

"You have to learn how to win when it's a whole new bunch coming in. We had some good freshman that we had to teach everything. And then we were trying to teach our seniors how to be leaders. It's been a little bit of a disfunctional family, but tonight we played as a family.'

UCA finishes up the regular season with road games at Northwestern State on Thursday and at Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.
