CONWAY, Ark. _ The Morehead State Eagles won just about every category on Monday night and it resulted in a 95-60 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears in non-conference action at the Farris Center.
The Eagles (5-10), who broke a six-game losing streak, shot 59.3 percent from the field, made 9 of 15 from three-point range, dominated the rebounding by a 38-22 margin and forced the Bears into 22 turnovers. UCA shot just 39 percent overall, made 5 of 15 from three-point range, including 1 of 8 in the second half.
"Where I come from in Missouri, we call that a good old country butt-whipping,' said UCA head coach Russ Pennell. "They beat us in about every way we could be beat. I don't know if the layoff or whatever... there are no excuses for it. I was very disappointed, especially in the first half. I didn't think our effort was very good.
"I thought the second half we tried a little bit harder, played a little bit harder, but by then Morehead had gotten going. And we don't have the kind of team right now that we can make major comebacks. We're just not at that level yet. I thought the second half the guys played hard, we just have to get better.'
UCA came out strong from the perimeter, with freshman Thatch Unruh hitting a pair of three-pointers and junior Mike Martin adding another to give the Bears an early 11-9 lead. UCA made five of its first six shots, including 3 of 4 from three-point range. But the Eagles found their range just as quickly and pushed out to a 25-15 lead at the 8:30 mark of the half.
Morehead State put together a 20-6 scoring run to end the half and carry a 48-28 lead to the locker room. The Eagles shot 62.1 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. UCA never got any closer in the second half as the Eagles continued to shoot well from the field, to the tune of 56.7 percent overall and 6 of 8 from beyond the arc.
Morehead State finished with five players in double figures, led by Marquel Willis and Corban Collins with 15 points each. Willis was 7 of 8 from the field and Collins was 6 of 9.Â
Unruh, a freshman guard from Branson, Mo., led the Bears with a career-high 16 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Martin, a junior from Wichita, Kan., added 11 points. Freshman guard Jordan Howard, who entered the game as UCA's leading scorer with a 16-point average, scored nine points to finish short of double figures for the first time this season.Â
  Â
"I think the big thing is on the defensive end,' said Pennell. "I'm not so worried about our offense, because I understand we didn't shoot the ball particularly well tonight. But I keep telling the guys, your offense is going to come and go, but man, that defense has to be a constant. And right now we're just not very good defensively.
"And that's the thing that bothers me, because we work a lot on it. And I will say this, in my past experiences, young teams struggle with the defensive part at the college level. Because in high school, they may be guarding only two good players on the floor. At this level, all five of them are good. And if you break down or let down at all, you're going to get scored on.Â
"And we don't have the ability yet to get those stops.'
UCA opens Southland Conference play at 4 p.m. Saturday at Abilene Christian. The Bears return home Tuesday when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 8 p.m.
