RED WOLVES KNOCK OFF BEARS 67-49

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears shot poorly from everywhere except the three-point line Monday night in a 67-49 loss to the Arkansas State Red Wolves in front of a crowd of 1,734 at the Farris Center.

UCA hit 34 percent from the field (17 of 50) and just 38.9 percent from the free-throw line (7 of 18). UCA, the leading three-point shooting team in the Southland Conference, was solid again from beyond the arc, going 8 of 21, but it was not enough to find the win column.

The Bears (0-7) cut an early eight-point deficit in the first half to just one point at halftime as junior guard Mike Martin beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to make it 29-28 at the break. UCA was 5 of 12 from three-point range in the first half, with Martin and freshman Thatch Unruh connecting twice each.

The Red Wolves (1-2) quickly expanded their lead to double figures in the first six minutes of the second half as UCA missed its first five shots from the field. The lead reached 14 points at 50-36 on a free throw by ASU's C.J. Foster. UCA grabbed the momentum back briefly as Martin ran off seven consecutive points on a pair of free throws, a three-pointer and a steal and layup to get UCA back to within 52-44 with 7:00 to play.

But ASU, which shot 51.7 percent in the second half, ran back out to as much as a 20-point advantage down the stretch. ASU was 15 of 29 in the second half while UCA was 17 of 50 for the entire game. The Bears had their lowest scoring half of the season, tallying just 21 points on six field goals (3 threes) and six free throws in the final 20 minutes.

Martin, a junior from Wichita, Kan., topped the Bears with 13 points, hitting 3 of 4 three-pointers, while freshman guard Jordan Howard from Chandler, Ariz., added 10 points. The Bears had a season-high 21 turnovers and were outscored 34-18 in the paint.

Sophomore forward Anthony Livingston led the Red Wolves in scoring for the third straight game, finishing with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Junior guard Cameron Golden added 14 points with four three-pointers, while junior center Nouhoum Boucoum had 12 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.

UCA returns to the road this weekend for its sixth road contest in eight games, playing Troy at noon Satiurday in Troy, Ala. Catch the action at ucasports.com/watch.
