Lake Charles, La. – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team took the field for the final time on Sunday afternoon, facing off with the Cowgirls of McNeese State University. After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, the Bears netted three second half goals, but came up just short, falling to the Cowgirls 4-3.
McNeese (8-9-1, 6-5-0 SLC) opened up the scoring in the eighth minute, as Krista Steinbeiser lofted a corner kick into the Central Arkansas box, where Sarah Bricker headed the ball home to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead. The Cowgirls added to their lead in the 40
th minute, as Lauren Sestak fed Savannah LaRicci, who scored on a breakaway to make it 2-0.
After the break, LaRicci picked up an assist of her own, feeding Cheyenne Ganley, who put in a shot off the post to put the Cowgirls up 3-0.
Central Arkansas (5-12-2, 1-9-1 SLC) finally got on the board in the 55
th minute, when
Vanessa Randall launched a corner kick into the McNeese box, where
Alexandra Wurst headed it home to cut the McNeese lead to 3-1.
The Bears cut into the lead again in the 61
st minute, when
Shelby Wilson slid a pass to Randall, who put it away from five yards out to pull Central Arkansas to within a goal.
McNeese found what would turn out the be the game-winner in the 61
st minute, as Tori Lassiter and Sierra Sisco connected to make it 4-2 in favor of the Cowgirls.
Randall picked up her second assist of the day in the 62
nd minute, hitting
Alex Moore, who scored her fourth goal of the season to again cut the lead to one goal.
Central Arkansas out-shot McNeese 18 to 12 on the day, and held a nine to six advantage in shots on goal. Randall, Wurst, and
Kate Koch led the Bear attack, with each putting two shots on goal, while Moore,
Lauren Trueheart, and
Allie Coleman each put one shot on target. LaRicci was the only Cowgirl with multiple shots on target, placing two on frame, while four Cowgirls had one shot on goal.
Sestak earned the win for McNeese, making six saves.
Anna Hughes and
Sarah Mayorga each played 45 minutes in goal for the Bears, and each made one save and allowed a pair of goals.
