CONWAY, Ark. _ The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders shot a blistering 61.9 percent from the field in the second half to down the University of Central Arkansas Bears 75-68 in Southland Conference action on Thursday night at the Farris Center.

A&M-CC (4-18, 3-9) hit 4 of 5 from three-point range in the second half to win its second straight game and even the season series with UCA. The Bears (9-14, 4-9) lost their third straight game and have five league games remaining in the regular season, with just two at home.

The Bears trailed just 37-36 at halftime, and were pulled to within five points at 66-63 with 1:33 to play on consecutive three-point plays by Robert Crawford and LaQuentin Miles. But the Islanders got a three-pointer from Will Nelson with 52 seconds left and Johnathan Jordan made 4 of 4 at the line in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.

“You don’t expect to give up 62 percent on your home court,’ said UCA head coach Corliss Williamson. “You expect to come out and defend your home court and make it difficult on other teams to score. You have to tip your hat to Corpus Christi because they came out and really executed in the second half.

“For us offensively, they just really got into us and were pressuring us and we didn’t respond at all. We were playing basketball east and west, side to side, instead of attacking the basket and getting to the paint. And we were turning the basketball over, that was the most frustrating part. We are the pressuring team but we ended up with 18 turnovers.’

Four players scored in double figures for A&M-CC, led by Hameed Ali with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Nelson added 14 points, while Jordan had 11 (7 of 8 from the line) and Dale Francis 10. Miles, a junior guard from Jacksonville, led UCA with 20 points, whle Crawford added 15 and Jarvis Garner 14.

The Bears, the top three-point shooting team in the SLC, made 7 of 22 (31.8 percent), but were just 3 of 12 (25 percent) in the second half.

UCA hosts Sam Houston State at 4 p.m. Saturday.
