CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears will be looking to break a five-game losing streak in Southland Conference play on Saturday when they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the American Bank Center.

UCA (5-10, 0-5) has been close to winning its first SLC game of the season, but hasn’t finished well enough to get a victory. The Bears cut a 14-point deficit to six points with 1:30 left to play Thursday night at Sam Houston State, but fell 63-52 to the second-place Bearkats.

“We have to learn how to get over the hump,’ said UCA head coach Corliss Williamson. “We’re getting close but we have to do the little things down the stretch that result in a victory.’

The Bears are the No. 2 three-point shooting team in the Southland, but have struggled from the perimeter in their past three games. UCA is a combined 11 of 40 (27.5 percent) from long range in losses to Stephen F. Austin, Northwestern State and SHSU, two of those at home.

The Islanders (2-13, 1-4) got its lone  league win against 2-15 Lamar in Beaumont, Texas, last week. A&M-CC is averaging just 59.3 points per game and is shooting 38.2 percent from the field, last in the conference. The Islanders are also ninth in the league in three-point shooting and last in rebounding.

Following Saturday’s game, the Bears return home to the Farris Cener for four straight games, beginning on Jan. 24 against McNeese State.
