WOMEN’S SOCCER COMES UP SHORT AGAINST SAM HOUSTON

Central Arkansas fell 2-1 to Sam Houston on Sunday
Huntsville, Texas –

The Central Arkansas women’s soccer team continued their recent offensive struggles on Sunday, falling 2-1 to Sam Houston State.

The Bearkats (5-7, 2-0 SLC) grabbed an early lead, when Katie Ferrara intercepted a pass from Central Arkansas keeper Kelsey Gochnauer and put it in from 18 yards for her first goal of the season. Sam Houston got back on the board in the 57th minute on a corner kick by Lindsey Posner. Shelby McDaniel collected the kick, and slid it to Kirby Zak, who scored her second goal of the season. The Bears (8-3-1, 0-1-1 SLC) struck back in the 86th minute, when Kristin Pollard corralled a corner from Elizabeth Brady and blasted it home for her fourth goal this season.

Central Arkansas outshot Sam Houston 15-8 on the day, led by Pollard and Cassie Lange, who each placed two of their three shots on goal. The Bearkats were led by Ferrar and Tricia Mallory, who also placed two of three on frame.

Kelsey Gochnauer played the first half in goal for the Bears, making a save and allowing one goal. Lyndzey Goff came on at the start of the second half and made three saves while allowing one goal. In net for the Bearkats, Kylie Hambleton made four saves and allowed one goal.

“It really just came down to the fact that they finished their opportunities and we didn’t finish ours,” said Central Arkansas coach Jeremy Bishop after the match, “we had more shots, and more on frame, but we just don’t seem to be putting them in right now.”

“The game was competitive and fairly evenly matched; we just have to make plays,” said Bishop. “We’ve done a good job on defense; we didn’t really give up anything in the run of play today, if we keep doing that the goals will come again.”

Central Arkansas returns to the pitch on Friday afternoon, hosting Stephen F. Austin at 4:00. They then play host to McNeese State on Sunday afternoon at 1:00.
