CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears grabbed two of the three weekly Southland Conference player of the week awards on Monday.
Senior wide receiver/kick returner Jesse Grandy was named the SLC Special Teams Player of the Week, while junior quarterback Wynrick Smothers was named the SLC Offensive Player of the Week.
Grandy, from Pine Bluff, accounted for 238 all-purpose yards in UCA’s 42-20 victory over Murray State on Saturday in Murray, Ky. He had 90 yards in punt returns, including a 72-yarder for a touchdown. Grandy added 75 yards in kickoff returns and also caught six passes for 73 yards and another touchdown, from 18 yards out. Grandy is second in the league in all-purpose yards with 139.5 per game.
Smothers, from Destrehan, La., threw touchdown passes to five different receivers among his 31 completions in 41 attempts, all career highs. He threw for a career-high 358 yards and added 21 rushing yards. In two games this season, Smothers has completed 56 of 73 passes (76.7 percent) for 605 yards. He leads the Southland with 302.5 passing yards per game.
The Bears, who have claimed three of the six SLC honors so far this season, play their home opener at 6 p.m. Saturday when they host Bacone College.
