HATTIESBURG, Miss. _ The University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears made it three straight Saturday, making short work of host Southern Miss at Reed Green Coliseum.
Behind a combined 27 kills from seniors Taylor Hammonds and Jessica Hays, the Sugar Bear won 25-16, 25-23 and 25-16 to improve to 3-0 on the young season. Hammonds, from Tomball, Texas, was named the tournament MVP, while Marissa Collins and Jessica Nagy were named to the All-Tournament team.
UCA had a .363 hitting percentage in the match while holding USM to just .186. In the first set, the Sugar Bears hit a blistering .586 percent, then added a .417 clip in the third and deciding set.
Collins had 51 assists for the second time in three matches, while sophomore Shelbee Berringer had a team-high 21 digs. No USM player had more than eight kills.
UCA returns to action next Friday in the Stetson Clarion Classic in Deland, Fla.
