SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Central Arkansas suffered a pair of setbacks on Friday, getting swept on the road at Texas State as the Bobcats remain undefeated at home in Southland Conference play.
The Bears (27-15, 6-5 Southland) were shut out in first game against the Bobcats (24-14, 10-2), losing 2-0, and narrowly dropped the second game, taking a 3-2 loss.
In the opener, the Bears were limited to just two hits -- one each by sisters Melanie and Melissa Bryant -- and did not advance a runner beyond second base. Kelsie Armstrong (16-9) took the loss for UCA, giving up two runs, one earned, and striking out four in six innings.
In the nightcap, UCA surrendered a pair of runs to the Bobcats in the third to fall behind 2-0, but rallied to tie the game by posting a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Melanie Bryant led off the inning by belting her third home run of the season to slice the Bears' deficit in half. In the fifth, UCA tied the game when Stephanie Lasley singled then stole second and was driven in two batters later on a double to left center by Tiffany Roby.
Texas State answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to take the 3-2 lead, which it would hold onto the rest of the way. Cami Newsome, who fell to 9-4, gave up a leadoff double to Shelby Carnline and was then relieved by Kelly Martino. Jordan Masek, the first batter Martino faced, laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Carnline over to third. An error on the play by Roby allowed Carnline to score, and the Bobcats would keep the Bears off the board over the final two innings.
UCA will finish its four-game weekend road swing with a doubleheader at UTSA on Sunday before returning home to face Hendrix on Tuesday night.
