CONWAY — The Central Arkansas Bears made history Friday night, beating conference foe Nicholls State 4-1. The victory was the 30
th of the year for the Bears (30-17, 4-5 SLC), giving them sole ownership of the record, which had previously been held by the 2000 squad that went 29-21.
The Bears wasted little time in taking the lead, as left fielder Nicole Beals drove the first pitch from Colonels pitcher Katie Moulder over the fence in center field for her first home run in a Central Arkansas uniform. Shortstop Lissa Avita quickly added to the lead by smashing a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left field to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Bears. Third baseman Tiffany Roby slashed a single through the left side and catcher Melanie Bryant doubled to left field to give the Bears two runners in scoring position with no out. A wild pitch brought Roby home and allowed Bryant to advance to third base. Following a walk to designated player Melissa Bryant, first baseman Ashley Boswell lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Roby, ending the Bears’ scoring for both the inning and the night. Central Arkansas would gather only two more hits on the night.
The Colonels threatened in third, loading the bases with a double and two singles, but Bears starter Kelsie Armstrong got shortstop Kat Angeles to line out to second baseman Stefanie Lasley who quickly flipped the ball to Boswell to double-off Colonels second baseman Ashley Bertot.
The only run for the Colonels (9-24, 4-5) would come on a home run by first baseman Leah Andrus in the sixth inning.
Armstrong (18-10) collected the win for the Bears, throwing her 27
th complete game of the season while allowing six hits and striking out five Colonels. Moulder (4-12) took the loss in her 11
th complete game of the season, giving up six hits in her six innings of work.
The Bears look to take the sweep tomorrow at noon, in Conway.
