BEARS UPENDED BY JACKSON STATE, 1-0

Nicole Beals had two hits in Sunday's 1-0 loss at Jackson State.
CONWAY, Ark. - The Jackson State pitching staff did something not many other teams have been able to do this season to the UCA offense—shut it down.

Jackson State starter Breea Jameson went 5.1 innings and allowed just four UCA hits as the Lady Tigers snapped UCA’s eight-game winning streak in the 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Tigers went to the bullpen for the final five outs and LeEthel Guillory was up to task as she retired all five UCA hitters she faced to earn the save.

UCA, who was held to a season low four hits, made their biggest offensive threat in the top of the first inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but a Tiffany Roby strikeout ended the rally. UCA would get runners into scoring position in each of the third, fourth and sixth innings, but Jackson State pitchers stifled UCA bats in those key situations.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning when Jackson State pinch runner Raveen Palmer came around to score on an RBI single by Felicia Wilson. The 1-0 advantage proved, unlikely, to be enough against a UCA offense that has been dominant all year.

Kelsie Armstrong, despite pitching well, was saddled with the loss for the Bears. The junior allowed just one run on five hits while recording nine strikeouts compared to just one walk. Her record fell to 12-6.

Offensively, the Bears were led by Nicole Beals’ 2-for-4 effort. Roby and Stephanie Lasley added the other two hits for UCA.

UCA will look to right the ship on Tuesday when they get back in action at Mississippi Valley State. Game time from Itta Benna, Miss. is set for 4 p.m.
