Central Arkansas will look to remain perfect on the young season as the 3-0 Sugar Bears travel to Ruston, La. to take on Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Sugar Bears, playing their third straight road game, are coming off wins at Southern Illinois and Alcorn State in a pair of games in which they allowed just 42.5 points per game on 28.5 percent shooting. Senior forward Megan Herbert averaged 19 points and 19.5 rebounds for the week
en route to her 14th Southland Conference Player of the Week honor, and Courtney Duever recorded her fourth career double-double in the win at Alcorn and averaged 11 points and nine rebounds for the week.
The Lady Techsters, led by Women's Basketball Hall of Fame member Teresa Weatherspoon, are 0-3 to begin the 2012-13 season. They opened the season with a 66-59 setback at Tulane, then lost 82-58 at home to South Carolina before dropping a close one last Friday – losing 57-55 at Mississippi State.
Brittany Lewis, a 6-foot-2 senior forward, is leading the Lady Techsters in both scoring (14 points per game) and rebounding (7.7 per game). The Lady Techsters roster features three players from the state of Arkansas, including sophomore forward Whitney Frazier, sophomore guard Kanedria Andrews and sophomore forward Savanna Langston – all from El Dorado. Frazier is averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game and had 10 points, eight rebounds and five steals in 36 minutes against Mississippi State.
The two teams have met just once before, with La. Tech winning 77-36 on Nov. 14, 2008. Sugar Bears head coach Sandra Rushing has some familiarity with the Lady Techsters, having faced them last season in an exhibition game while at Division II Delta State. The Techsters won that meeting 61-48. They went on to finish the season 17-15 and just missed making the NCAA Tournament as they lost to Fresno State in the Western Athletic Conference tournament finals.
