BEARS HOST OLD RIVAL WARRIORS

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears will open their home season Tuesday night against one of their oldest rivals, the Hendrix Warriors from across town.

The Bears and Warriors, who have played 128 times in men’s basketball, will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Farris Center.

UCA, under head coach Corliss Williamson, is 0-1 after opening the 2012 season with a 79-64 loss at Pac-12 Arizona State last Saturday. The Warriors will open their season against the Bears.

The Bears and Warriors will meet for the 129th time, with UCA leading the series 74-54. The old rivals from the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference and NAIA days, renewed their series in 2009-10 after not playing since 1992 when Hendrix moved from NAIA to NCAA Division III. UCA won 68-40 the first year and again in 2010-11 (87-46).

UCA returns three starters from last year’s team, including All-Southland Conference preseason first-team selection LaQuentin Miles and Conway senior Jarvis Garner, a 6-7 forward who was UCA’s second leading scorer last season. UCA junior forward Jordan Harks led the Bears with 16 points and 10 rebounds against the Sun Devils on Saturday.

The Warriors have only two seniors on their roster, including top returning scorer in 5-10 guard Jaren Riley, who averaged 9.6 points per game and made 46 three-pointers last season. Hendrix, coached by Thad McCracken, has eight freshman on its roster.
