BEARS BATTLE RAIN, DARKNESS BEFORE FALLING TO LADYJACKS

Conway, Ark. –

The Central Arkansas women’s soccer team endured two separate weather delays before Friday night’s match was called in the 77th minute due to darkness, giving the visiting Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks a 1-0 victory.

After only seven minutes of play, the game was delayed due to lightning. After a thirty minute stoppage, play resumed for only four minutes before lightning again delayed the game. When play resumed, the teams battled out the rest of the half, heading into halftime tied at 0-0.

The only goal of the game came in the 67th minute, when Becky Johnson blasted home a free kick from 35 yards out for her first goal this season.

The Bears (8-4-1, 0-1-1 SLC) took six shots, placing four on frame. They were led by Adriana Lucar, who placed two of her three shots on target. The Ladyjacks (10-3, 3-0 slc)placed five of their 16 shots on goal.

Kelsey Gchnaeur played all 76 minutes in goal for the Bears, making four saves and allowing one goal. In goal for Stephen F. Austin, Lacey Lee made four saves, collecting her eighth shutout of the season.

“Going into the game, most people expected we wouldn’t have a chance,” said Coach Jeremy Bishop, “but we came out and played with a lot of desire and effort. We had a lot of chances in the first half, but as the storm came through, it made things more difficult in the second half.”

The Bears return to the pitch on Sunday, facing off with McNeese State. “We’ve got to finish our chances on Sunday,” said Bishop. “I feel like we’ll have chances, we just have to take advantage of them.
