The Central Arkansas overcame a slow start on Thursday night to down the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 3-1.
In the first set, the Islanders (16-8, 8-4 SLC) stormed out to a 6-0 lead, before taking a 25-17 victory in the set.
The Sugar Bears (23-3, 11-2 SLC) responded in kind in the second set, getting out to a 6-1 lead before taking the set 27-25. The Sugar Bears took the third set 25-18, and the fourth set 25-18.
For the night, the Sugar Bears hit .280, led by Heather Schnars, who hit .480 on her way to 14 kills. Jessica Hays led
Central Arkansas in kills, collecting 18 to go with 4 digs, an ace, and an assist. Scout Brooks chipped in with 12 kills, nine digs, a block, and an ace. Marissa Collins keyed the Sugar Bear offense, dishing out 46 assists and tallying 12 digs, an ace, and a block.
The Islanders hit .240 on the night, led by Briana Brink, who hit .500 on her way to a team high 20 kills. Ivy Baresh was the only other Islander with double-digit kills, gathering 10, along with eight digs, a block, and an assist. Logan Bourke distributed 41 assists, while also getting nine digs, four aces, and three blocks.
The Sugar Bears return to action on Saturday afternoon at 4:00, battling Sam Houston State, sits only one game back of the Sugar Bears for the top spot in the Southland Conference.
