NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The University of Central Arkansas softball overcame a four-run deficit by scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning, en route to a 6-4 road victory over Stephen F. Austin. With the win, the Bears (24-29, 10-17 Southland) claimed the series victory over the Ladyjacks (13-34, 8-19) two games to one.
SFA took a 1-0 lead in the first when second baseman Elizabeth Arana led off with a base hit and later scored on a ground out by Cadie Weaver.
The Ladyjacks extended the lead to 4-0 with a three-run fifth inning as they connected on three hits and took advantage of two UCA errors. Lauren Luetge had a RBI-base hit and Amber Price drove in two on a single in the inning.
SFA pitcher Carlie Thomas limited the Bears to just one base hit through the first six innings. UCA exploded for five hits in the top of the seventh, leading to six runs.
Senior first baseman Shay Ristau led off the inning with a base hit and freshman pinch hitter Kelvon Greer was hit by a pitch. Freshman pinch hitter Taylor Dear was walked to load the bases with no outs. Ashlynn Tovar, Nicole Beals, Lindsey Barsoum and Melissa Bryant connected on four run-scoring singles to tie the game. Thomas threw a wild pitch, allowing Beals to score the go-ahead run. Ristau grounded out to score Barsoum for the final run of the game.
Bryant, a sophomore second baseman, led UCA with two hits. Junior center fielder Kasey Britt tied a school a record by drawing three walks. Price went 3-for-4 with two batted in for the Ladyjacks.
Junior reliever Katie McGregor (2-1) picked up the win by striking out three and allowing two hits in 2.1 scoreless innings. Junior starter Cami Newsome went 4.2 innings, and gave up five hits, three earned runs and three walks to go with two strikeouts. Thomas (8-11) allowed six hits, five walks and struck out five for the loss.
UCA will play their final series of the year at home against Sam Houston State beginning with a double-header on Saturday.
