CONWAY, Ark. - Down by two in the bottom of the sixth inning, the University of Central Arkansas softball team scored four runs to capture a 4-2 victory and a series sweep over Nicholls at Farris Field on Sunday. The Bears (17-20, 7-8 Southland) outhit the Colonels (9-23, 2-12) 8-7 and capitalized on two NSU errors in the fateful inning, giving UCA their first Southland Conference series sweep of the season.
The Colonels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when second baseman Tori Lay led off with a base hit and was driven in on a single from left fielder Whitney Roan. Right fielder Kat Angles hit a solo homer over the fence in center field in the top of the sixth to give Nicholls a 2-0 lead.
UCA junior left fielder Kasey Britt started the bottom of the sixth by reaching on an error by shortstop Alaina Guidry. Sophomore catcher Melanie Bryant followed with a walk to put two runners on. Melissa Bryant, a sophomore shortstop, initially showed bunt, but then drove a double into left field allowing Britt to score easily and Melanie Bryant to cross the plate beating the tag by Colonel catcher Katie Holmes. Melissa Bryant moved to third on a wild pitch from hurler Ashton Bennett. Junior Katie McGregor then singled to NSU third baseman Ashley Ray, who threw the ball away allowing Bryant to score and give UCA a 3-2 advantage. Freshman third baseman Tarra Underhill hit a one-out single through the right side, allowing pinch runner Lindsey Barsoum to score, to give the Bears the 4-2 win.
McGregor and Underhill each had two hits to lead the Bears. Center fielder Megan Gaspared went 3-for-3 for the Colonels.
Sophomore Kelsie Armstrong (11-13), who broke UCA's career strikeout record on Saturday, fanned 10, giving her 30 strikeouts over her last 18 innings over three starts. Bennett (5-11) struck out five and walked one while allowing three earned runs.
UCA will go on the road for another Southland Conference series beginning Saturday at third place Texas State.
