CONWAY, Ark. _ Sophomore pitcher Kelsie Armstrong struck out 15 batters and junior Kasey Britt hit a solo home run as the University of Central Arkansas Bears pounded Lyon College 7-0 on Wednesday at Conway High School.
Armstrong (14-19) was one short of tying the single-game school record of 16 strikeouts. She did not allow a hit until there was one out in the sixth inning. Lyon (21-23) finished with two hits and made one error.
Britt, who started in left field and later moved to center, has homered in five of the past six games and is now tied with Melanie Bryant for the team lead with eight.
UCA got two runs in the second inning on Tarra Underhill's two-run double to center field. The Bears added three more runs in the third with Britt's solo home run and another two-run double from Underhill, who finished 2 for 3 with 4 RBI.
In the fourth inning, UCA got a run on a double steal, with Kelvon Greer scoring from third. Britt followed with an RBI ground out that scored Nicole Beals.
Underhill, Greer, Melanie Bryant and Shay Ristau all had two hits for the Bears (22-28) against three different Lyon pitchers. Kaitlyn Patterson had a double for the Scots.
UCA returns to Southland Conference play this weekend, traveling to Nacogdoches, Texas, to take on Stephen F. Austin.
