BEARS CAP WEEKEND WITH 2-1 WIN OVER BEARKATS

WACO, Texas - The University of Central Arkansas softball finished third at the Baylor QTI Powers Invitational by topping Sam Houston State 2-1 at Getterman Stadium on Sunday. The Bears (4-10) outhit the Bearkats (7-13) 8-3 in the non-conference matchup.

Junior Kasey Britt, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the game off with a double to left field and later scored on a base hit by sophomore catcher Melanie Bryant, who was also named to the all-tourney team.

Bearkat second baseman Alyssa Coggins hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1.

UCA scored the final run of the game in the fifth when Bryant drove in junior right fielder Nicole Beals with a single to left field.

Bryant and Britt had two hits each for the Bears. First baseman Kim Damian had two hits for the Bearkats.

Sophomore Kelsie Armstrong (3-7) struck out six with two walks and three hits for the win. Cecilia Castillo struck out two while allowing eight hits and three walks for SHSU.

The Bears will make their season debut at home on Tuesday with a double-header against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 p.m.
