UCA VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS MEMPHIS

Box Score

CONWAY, Ark. - For the second consecutive night, the University of Central Arkansas volleyball hit over .350, en route to the program's first win over Memphis in front of 423 fans at the Prince Center on Friday. UCA (8-6) picked up their second win of the 2010 Sugar Bear Classic by downing the Tigers (8-3) 25-19, 25-12, 25-23. UM had defeated the Sugar Bears in each of the first six matchups, dating back to 1981.

"It's nice to finally beat Memphis," said Central Arkansas head coach Steven McRoberts. "They came into the match confident and on a five-match winning streak.

"Our team played great and the hit over .350 for the second match in a row is very rewarding. We had an outstanding crowd for a Friday night. I heard there was a line out the front door. This win should really  help our confidence as we get ready for another conference run."

UCA hit a robust .351 with 46 kills, while Memphis struggled offensively, hitting .116 with 24 kills. The Sugar Bears dominated the first two sets, but had to fight off the Tigers in the third.

The scored was tied nine times with two lead changes in the decisive frame. Tied 23-23, UCA took the lead on a kill by Taylor Hammonds and ended the match on a Memphis attack error.

Hammonds, a sophomore from Tomball, Texas, led the Sugar Bears with 12 kills and hit a career-high .647. Senior Chloe Smith hit .435 with 11 kills and freshman Jessica Nagy added nine. Junior Cristin Curl led UCA with 12 digs and senior Chloe Evans came up with eight. Freshman setter Marissa Collins recorded 40 assists.

Memphis was led by Altrese Hawkins with 10 kills and Christine Bach with 12 digs.

The Sugar Bears will wrap up the tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Jackson State.
