HAMMOND, La. - The University of Central Arkansas volleyball team claimed their second consecutive Southland Conference regular season title and the top seed of next week's Southland Conference by sweeping Southeastern Louisiana at the University Center on Saturday. The 25-13, 25-18, 25-19 victory gave the Sugar Bears a 26-7 overall record for the year and a 15-1 mark in league play.
UCA will wait and see who their first round opponent will be when the tournament opens on Friday in Huntsville, Texas.
"I'm very proud of our players and staff," said sixth-year head coach Steven McRoberts. "To have three freshmen on the floor all year and go 15-1 is just amazing. It is rewarding to be the number one seed in our first conference tournament.
"We need three more wins to achieve our biggest goal of representing UCA in the NCAA Tournament. It's quite a run this program is on - winning 37 of our past 38 conference matches. This year's record exceeded our expectations and my assistants and players deserve all the credit for that.
"We are looking forward to getting re-energized next week as we prepare for the SLC Tournament."
UCA outhit SLU (10-23, 1-15 SLC) .364 to .042 and had a 42-27 kills advantage. The Sugar Bears also had nine blocks and 44 digs, while the Lady Lions recorded five blocks and 31 digs.
Junior Jessica Hays posted her 15th double-double fo the season with 12 kills and 15 digs and also had a season-high five blocks. Senior Chloe Smith recorded 11 kills. Sophomore Taylor Hammonds and freshman Karlie Giesler had seven kills each, with Hammonds coming up with five blocks.Junior libero Cristin Curl had 15 digs and freshman Marissa Collins posted 37 assists.
Courtney Donald led SLU with eight kills and Alex Greer had eight digs. Lindsey Young recorded 16 assists and eight digs.
