UCA SOFTBALL TOPS UAPB AND CBC

CONWAY, Ark. - The University of Central Arkansas softball team wrapped up the UCA Fall Tournament with wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Central Baptist on Sunday at Farris Field. The Bears topped the Lady Lions 8-0 in six innings in the first game, then followed with a 4-0 victory over the Mustangs in game two.

UCA outhit UAPB 10-3, led by junior left fielder Nicole Beals' 3-for-3 performance. Sophomore shortstop Melissa Bryant drove in two runs and sophomore second baseman Preslie Long went 2-for-3.

Junior pitcher Kristen Johnson earned the win, allowing three hits and five walks with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Junior Cami Newsome earned the same by striking out three in 1.2 innings.

Sophomore Kelsie Armstrong struck out 12 in a two-hit shutout against CBC, while the Bears came up with eight hits.

UCA got on the board in the bottom of the first when Bryant doubled in sophomore Candice Gauntt, who led off the inning by reaching on an error. Gauntt scored again in the third after leading off with a double, stealing third and scoring on an errant throw.

Freshman third baseman Tarra Underhill drove in Bryant and Kelvon Greer with a double in the sixth inning for the final runs of the game.

Gauntt and Bryant recorded two hits each for the Bears.

UCA will finish their fall schedule on Saturday when they face Tulsa and Missouri State in Springfield, Mo.
