CONWAY, Ark. - The University of Central Arkansas volleyball team extended their Southland Conference and home winning streaks as they topped Nicholls in three sets at the Prince Center on Saturday afternoon. With the 25-21, 25-22, 25-22, the Sugar Bears move their league streak to 27 matches, which is the second longest in the country, behind Hawaii's Western Athletic Conference streak of 29. UCA has also won 24 straight in the Prince Center. Both streaks date back to the 2008 season.
The Colonels (10-7, 3-2 SLC) hit .364 and made only two attack errors in the first set, but the Sugar Bears (14-6, 5-0 SLC) connected on 20 kills and hit a blistering .421, en route to a 25-21 victory. UCA pounded out another 19 kills, while Nicholls only managed 13 in the second set.
UCA had a 19-12 lead in set three, but the Colonels made a 7-1 run, cutting the lead to 20-19. UCA finished off the match with kills from Taylor Hammonds, Jessica Hays and Marissa Collins and a block by Jessica Nagy.
For the match, UCA outhit Nicholls .295 to .231 and had 56 kills, compared to 40 for the Colonels.
Collins, a freshman setter from Pearland, Texas, set a record by recording 48 assists, the most in a three-set match in Sugar Bear history. She also had six kills and hit .750 with no errors. Senior Chloe Smith knocked down 12 kills and Hammonds added 11. Hays came up with a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Nagy added nine kills and hit .389. Junior libero Cristin Curl led all players with 22 digs and senior Chloe Evans came up with nine.
Sophomore Jennifer Brandt led the Colonels with 14 kills and hit .406. Danielle Daigle had 17 digs and Nancy Taylor recorded 25 assists.
UCA will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a non-conference match on Monday night at 7 p.m.
