CONWAY, Ark. - The University of Central Arkansas won both of their games on the first day of the UCA Fall Tournament at Farris Field on Saturday. The Bears started the day with a 9-1, five-inning victory over Paris Junior College, then topped Lyon 9-3 in the nightcap.
Against Paris, the Bears exploded for 15 hits. UCA had 11 different players record hits, including a three-run double by junior first baseman Kasey Britt. Candice Gauntt, Nicole Beals, Melanie Bryant and Tarra Underhill each had two hits for the Bears. Senior Shayleen Ristau drove in two runs.
Sophomore pitcher Kelsie Armstrong earned the win by striking out six over the first three innings. Junior Kelley Martino allowed two hits and run and struck out three in the final two frames.
The Bears outhit Lyon 16-5 in the second game. Ten different players came up with hits.
Britt and Bryant recorded back-to-back solo home runs in the fourth inning. Britt went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Gauntt had three hits and Melissa Bryant, Katie McGregor and Preslie Long had two hits a piece. Long drove in two runs on the day.
Junior Cassidy Rash struck out five and allowed three walks, three hits and two runs in three innings. Junior Cami Newsome struck out one and gave up two hits and run in two innings and junior Kristen Johnson struck out one and allowed a walk over two frames.
The Bears will wrap up the tournament on Sunday when they play Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 1 p.m. and Central Baptist at 3 p.m.
