LATE OWN GOAL SINKS BEARS IN SOUTHLAND OPENER

Brittany Kemper had two second-half goals in Friday's loss
Box Score

CONWAY — Brittany Kemper scored two goals three minutes apart late in the second half to bring UCA back from a 2-0 halftime deficit, but the Bears were done in by an own goal in the final two minutes and fell 3-2 to Sam Houston State in the 2010 Southland Conference opener for both teams.

The Bears (4-5-1, 0-1 Southland) fell behind in just the third minute of action when SHSU's Kirby Zak gave the Bearkats (5-6-1, 1-0) the lead when she took a corner kick from Paige Rodriguez and headed it in for her second goal of the season.

The Bearkat lead extended to two in the 43rd minute on a goal from Kelsi Brown.

UCA cut the lead in half in the 71st minute when Abigail Hodgson's shot banged off the crossbar and ricocheted to Kemper, who put it in the net for her second goal of the year.

She got her third in the 74th minute, taking a ball played from the left side by Alex Barnett and knocking it past SHSU keeper Jenny Pence to tie the game.

The game remained tied until just 1:32 remained when the Bears, in an attempt to clear the ball, inadvertently knocked it into their own net for the deciding score.

The Bearkats outshot UCA 18-11 with 11 shots on goal to six for the Bears. SHSU had seven corner kicks while UCA had just one.

Pence had four saves in picking up her fifth win of the season. Kelsey Gochnauer had seven for the Bears.

UCA will host Stephen F. Austin on Sunday at 1 p.m.
