BEARS BLANK COLONELS FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT WIN

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas tennis team continued their unstoppable play on Sunday afternoon at the UCA Tennis Courts as they defeated the Nicholls Colonels (1-10, 0-4 SLC) 7-0 for their eighth straight win and second sweep of the season.

The Bears (10-5, 4-0 SLC) have now turned in four straight weekends of 2-0 play and are off to their best Southland Conference start in program history. They are one of two teams (Sam Houston State) in the SLC with a perfect mark through four matches.

SINGLES – Leading 1-0 after doubles play for the eighth time in a row, the Bears quickly found themselves with a 3-0 advantage after sweeps from sophomore Fuka Nonoyama and junior Yada Vasupongchai at the No. 2 and 4 courts. Nonoyama improved to a team-best 10-2 on the year while Vasupongchai improved to 5-1 at the No. 4. Up 3-0, freshman Maja Gledic was able to secure the win for the second straight match as she took the No. 3 court 6-4, 6-2. With the match won, the success for Central Arkansas kept coming as freshman Paulina Engback got her first SLC win on the year with an impressive 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 win at No. 6. Freshman Jaeun Lee picked up her eighth win on the season with a sweep at the No. 5 and sophomore Chunxi Xin gave the UCA crowd even more to cheer for as she won a three-set bout with freshman Laura Lopez at the top court to conclude Central Arkansas' perfect day.

VASUPONGCHAI ON THE WIN

"Overall, I think we all did great. Even though their (Nicholls) record was down, they're still a good team and we didn't think it'd be an easy match. We did everything we had to do, followed the routines and brought our best efforts on all the courts."

UP NEXT

The Bears will wrap up their three-game homestand next weekend as they will welcome the Northwestern State Lady Demons on March 14.
