Benton, Ky. – The Central Arkansas tennis team ended their Kentucky trip on a high note today as they picked up wins over the Wright State Raiders and Western Kentucky Lady Toppers at the Kenlake Tennis Center. The Bears (4-5) were guided by solid doubles play all afternoon as they took 1-0 leads into singles play for both matches and never looked back.
UCA 6, WRIGHT STATE 1
SINGLES – Junior
Yada Vasupongchai continued her strong weekend play as she stayed unbeaten at the No. 4 with a sweep to start the morning off for the Bears. Sophomore
Fuka Nonoyama followed closely behind Vasupongchai with a clean sleep at the No. 2 to pick up her fourth win on the year. After the Raiders took court No. 3 to make it 3-1, sophomore
Chunxi Xin collected the third sweep of the morning as she won 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 to clinch the match. Up 4-1, freshmen
Jaeun Lee and
Paulina Engback joined in the fun of their older teammates and collected sweeps at the No. 5 and 6 to finalize the 6-1 score.
DOUBLES – The sophomore pairing of Xin and Nonoyama continued to shine at the No. 1 as they won 6-1 and improved to 6-2 on the year. The young-meshed pairing of sophomore
Mei Ishimura and Engback clinched the doubles point for Central Arkansas after a 6-3 win at the No. 3 improved their season mark to 3-3.
UCA 5, WESTERN KENTUCKY 2
SINGLES – Vasupongchai replicated her morning performance by grabbing the first singles point with a 6-1, 6-3 win to improve to 4-0 on the year. Nonoyama followed Vasupongchai again with another sweep at the No. 2 to advance to 5-1 on the year and make it 3-0 Bears. And as you might guess, Xin had the honor of clinching the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 1 to improve to 4-3 at the top spot. Up 4-0, Ishimura was able to grind out a three-set battle at the No. 3 before the Lady Toppers took courts 5 and 6 to finalize the 5-2 finish.
DOUBLES – The freshman/junior pairing of
Maja Gledic and Vasupongchai started the afternoon match off with a clean 6-2 win at the No. 2 that set up Ishimura and Engback to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 at the No. 3.
UP NEXT
The Bears will return home to rest before heading to Springfield, Missouri for a doubleheader on February 22 against the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Missouri State University.
