NORTH LITTLE ROCK – The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears moved indoors to avoid the cold on Sunday, hosting a pair of matches at the Burns Park Tennis Complex. The Sugar Bears opened the day with a hard-fought win over Austin Peay, before cruising to a sweep of Oral Roberts.
Central Arkansas (4-2) found itself in a hole early in the doubles competition, as Austin Peay's Lidia Yanes Garcia and Claudia Yanes Garcia scored a 6-3 win in the number one match over
Pornpawee Pramethong and
Marli Van Heerden in the number one match, but
Chunan Xiang and
Amiru Shimoguchi evened the contest with a 6-4 win over Helena Kuppig and Ana Albertson in the number two match. An injury in the number three match saw
QiLi Ma and
Rada Manataweewat score a default victory to give Central Arkansas a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
The Governors stormed out of the gates in the singles contest though, earning three straight points to put the Sugar Bears on the defensive. Ma dropped her number three match against Kuppig 4-6, 1-6, and Xiang fell to Fabienne Schmidt 3-6, 4-6 in the number two contest, before Pramethong dropped a 6-2,2-6,4-6 decision to Lidia Yanes Garcia in the number one match.
The Sugar Bears got a point back by default in the number six match, and Shimoguchi evened things up at 3-3 with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Brittany Covington in the number five match. With the victory riding on the outcome of the number four match between UCA's
Hee-Jin Oh and the Govs' Albertson, the Sugar Bear junior delivered, earning a straight-set, 6-3, 6-1 win.
Central Arkansas left nothing to chance in the afternoon's match with Oral Roberts (3-6), cruising to a 4-0 win.
