GRAY, LIRA NAMED SUBWAY STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

Conway – Baseball player Tyler Gray and women's golfer Fernanda Lira have been named the Subway Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of March. The Subway Student-Athlete of the Month Award, which honors one male and one female student-athlete at the University of Central Arkansas each month, is based upon academic and athletic success.

Gray, a senior from Fort Smith, Arkansas, made five starts on the mound as Central Arkansas went 15-6 during March. The righty compiled a 2-0 record while throwing 35.1 innings and holding his opponents to 27 hits, 10 runs, and a .227 batting average. Gray had an ERA of 2.55 while striking out 47 batters and issuing just 10 walks. He was even better against Southland Conference opponents, going 2-0 with a 2.01 ERA after allowing just seven runs on 23 hits and striking out 42 in 31.1 innings. Gray was named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week after tying the school record with 14 strikeouts in 7.0 innings at McNeese State on March 9, before throwing a complete game an allowing three runs with nine strikeouts against Incarnate Word on March 16th. He continued his hot streak on March 23rd, limiting New Orleans to two runs and striking out nine in 8.1 innings, before closing out the month by holding Northwestern State to a single run while striking out 10 in 7.0 innings. Gray currently carries a 3.31 GPA in pursuit of a Physical Education Teach Education.

Lira, a senior from Mexico City, Mexico, was named the Southland Conference Women's Golfer of the Month after leading the Bears to a pair of Top 5 finishes in March. She finished in the Top 5 in all three of UCA's tournaments, carding a 211 (69-71-71) at the 3M Augusta Invitational, and tied for 4th at the River Landing Classic (73-73-70_215) while tying for 5th at the Mountain View Collegiate (74-70-73_217). Her 211 at the Augusta Invitational is a career low for a single tournament, and her 69 in the first round ties her career low for a round. Lira, who is majoring in Marketing, has a 3.37 GPA.
