Men's Soccer Falls to Drake in First Post-Season Appearance

OMAHA, NEB. -  Participating in their first post-season game since making the move to Division-I, the University of Central Arkansas Men’s Soccer team fell 3-0 in the first round of the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Championship Tournament. The match pitted the 5th-seeded Bears against the 4th-seeded Drake Bulldogs. The Bears (2-12-4, 1-4-2 MVC) were attempting to defeat the Bulldogs (11-7-1, 4-3-0 MVC) for the second time this season.
The Bulldogs got on the board first Wednesday, when Charles Schwartz put a free kick into the net from 20 yards out in the 37th minute. The goal was Schwartz’s 5th of the season. Drake was able to add some insurance in the 60th minute, when Ross Payne was able to take the ball from the Bears on a defensive miscue and net his 2nd goal of the season. Matt Kuhn gave the Bulldogs even more insurance just 5 minutes later, drilling a shot into the lower left corner of the net for his 11th goal of the season.
The Bears attempted a total of 6 shots during the game, with 4 of those coming on goal. They were led by Mickey Segura, who attempted half of those shots, as well as half of the shots on goal. Andrew van Woesik was able to place both of his shots on goal, and Taylor Hart put his lone shot on goal. The Bulldogs took 10 shots during the match, and were able to place 5 on goal. They were lead by Schwartz, who took 4 shots, with 2 on goal. The Bulldogs spread their remaining 6 shots evenly, with Kuhn, Payne, and Addison Eck providing the remaining shots on goal.
Central Arkansas goalkeeper Patxi Shortsleeve faced 5 shots on the day, but was only able to make 2 saves. Bulldogs goalkeeper Jordan Kadlec managed to stop all 4 of the shots that he faced.
The loss marks the end of the season for the Bears, who will return to action for the 2012 season looking to build on some of the firsts that they achieved over the course of this season. Drake faces off against 1st-seeded Missouri State on Friday at 3:00 PM.
