FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Central Arkansas volleyball team shocked national power TCU on their home court with a four-set win in the final match of the TCU Molten Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Sugar Bears (5-3) downed the Horned Frogs (3-3), who finished last season ranked 34rd in the NCAA RPI, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-14. Junior libero Cristin Curl and sophomore middle blocker Taylor Hammonds were named to the all-tournament team.
"This is the biggest non-conference win in our program's history," said UCA head coach Steven McRoberts. "We could have had several all-tournament players this weekend. This really was a total team effort. It was great to play our best on their home floor. This will go a long way in helping our confidence this year."
The Sugar Bears started the first set with a 6-1 lead, led by three aces from junior outside hitter Jessica Hays. TCU fought to tie the set at 13-13, but UCA answered with a 8-0 run and ended up winning the opening frame 25-21. UCA came out on fire again in the second set, jumping out to a 7-1 advantage. Again, the Horned Frogs would tie it at 12-12, but an 8-3 Sugar Bear run gave them control en route to a 25-19 victory.
TCU rebounded to win the third set 25-22 after six ties and two lead changes. UCA took a 13-11 lead in the final set and finished off the Horned Frogs on a 12-3 roll.
The Sugar Bears had an advantage in every stat category. They outhit TCU .196 to .106 and had a 57-41 lead in kills. UCA's defense was a big factor as they came up with season-bests 81 digs and 12 blocks, while TCU managed 73 digs and 7 blocks. The Sugar Bears also had 10 aces.
Curl paced the Sugar Bears back row with a career-high 34 digs. Hays recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 16 kills and 16 digs. The Friendswood, Texas native also had four aces and three block assists. Senior right side Chloe Smith also had a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs and led all players with seven total blocks. Hammonds had 10 kills and four blocks. Freshman setter Marissa Collins posted 45 assists and freshman Jessica Nagy had six assisted blocks.
Irene Hester led the Horned Frogs with 12 kills. Kay Lin Connolly had 23 digs and setter Meghan Horio had 28 assists and 12 digs.
UCA will be off until Friday when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky. for Western Kentucky's tournament. The Sugar Bears open with Viriginia Tech and Tennesse Tech on Friday and face Missouri and host WKU on Saturday.
