BATON ROUGE, La. — Central Arkansas picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, earning a split in the second day of the Tiger Classic at LSU by defeating SIU-Edwardsville 2-1 after a 7-0 loss to Minnesota earlier in the day.
Freshman outfielder Randi Wallace blasted a two-out, two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the 5th to break a scoreless tie with the Cougars, and the Bears (1-3) held on after surrendering one run in the top of the 7th to claim their first victory of 2014.
Junior first baseman Ashley Boswell drew a two-out walk off of SIUE's Haley Chambers and Wallace followed with the decisive home run, which doubled as her first collegiate hit.
The Cougars (0-4) threatened in the 7th, with two on after cutting the UCA lead in half, but Ciara Clampitt got SIUE's Kayla Riggs to pop up to end the game.
In the opener, the Bears were held to three hits against the Gophers, who move to 4-0 after defeating Murray State and LSU on Friday and SIU-Edwardsville in their first game on Saturday. The Gophers, an NCAA tournament team and Big 10 tournament finalist in 2013, got on board in the first inning then strung six runs together in the fourth through sixth innings, getting three in the 4th, one in the 5th and two in the 6th. Sara Groenewegen struck out 14 for the Gophers and was 2 for 4 at the plate with a home run. Minnesota third baseman Kaitlyn Richardson, a 3rd team All-American last season, was also 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI.
The Bears got their first runner in scoring position in the 6th when freshman outfielder Hannah Stirton doubled with one out and advanced to third on a flyout by Jessie Taylor. Randi Wallace was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with two down, but were unable to push a run across.
Freshman Kayla Gomness took the loss for the Bears, allowing four earned runs while striking out two and walking none.
UCA will wrap up the Tiger Classic on Sunday when they face No. 19 LSU at 1 p.m.
