BEARS SET FOR SECOND SCRIMMAGE ON SATURDAY

QB coach Nathan Brown talks to the four quarterbacks during a recent practice
CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears will have their second full scrimmage of the fall Saturday, with less than two weeks remaining before their 2011 season opener.

The Bears will hit the purple and gray turf at First Security Field at Estes stadium at 4 p.m. Saturday.

“We hope to make this second scrimmage as game-like as possible,’ said UCA head coach Clint Conque. “We’ll have coaches in the press box, head phones, the 40/25-second clocks, officials and all.

“We’ll work all of our kicking game and then finish off with two-minute situations.’

The Bears practiced once Friday and then will have a walk-through Saturday morning before the scrimmage.

“We still have some very heated battles going on at several positions,’ said Conque. “We’re getting down to the close of camp and we need some guys to rise to the top. This will be an important scrimmage for a lot of our young players, for them to show us they are ready to earn some playing time.’

The Bears open the season at home on Thursday, Sept. 1 against old rival Henderson State before hitting the road for three consecutive road games to finish out September.

The Bears are ranked in nearly every FCS preseason Top 25 poll. College Sporting News put out a consolidated poll this week, combining the five major FCS polls. UCA was the top ranked Southland Conference team at No. 18. Stephen F. Austin was 19th, McNeese State was 20th, Northwestern State was 22nd and Sam Houston State was tied for 34th.
