CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee made a dream come true last Saturday during halftime of the men’s basketball game against Sam Houston State.
The committee, represented by members of various UCA athletic teams, presented 15-year-old Logan Beck with an XBox 360 Kinect, a 37-inch LCD television and numerous video games as partners with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The SAAC raised nearly $6,000 from a pancake breakfast in January to fund the wish.
“I’m not so sure our student-athletes didn’t get more out of this than Logan did,’ said Natalie Shock, UCA assistant athletic director in charge of the SAAC. “They were excited about the presentation at halftime, but then they spent a lot of time with Logan and his family after that. They really enjoyed the whole experience.’
Logan was brought onto the court at halftime to supposedly participate in a shooting contest. Unknown to him, UCA student-athletes were chosen as his other competitors. When it came time to begin the contest, the student-athletes instead unveiled a cart containing all the Make-A-Wish items.
On the court with Logan were student-athletes Elizabeth Brady (soccer), Justin Heard (football), Damon Hymas and Andrew O’Brien (soccer), Jessica Hays (volleyball) and Sasha Ruocco (tennis), along with Shock and UCA mascot Bruce D. Bear.
Each year, the SAAC chooses a charity to partner with, and all funds raised at the annual pancake breakfast support that organization. UCA administrators and student-athletes take orders, cook, serve and clean up during the event, held each year at Stoby’s Restaurant in Conway.
The SAAC is made up of student-athletes from each of UCA’s 17 sports.
